Volgens de mythe hadden alchemisten het vermogen om iets heel gewoons te transformeren tot iets heel bijzonders. Ze zochten naar de formule om goud te maken, waarbij goud symbool stond voor de perfectie van alle materie, inclusief de geestelijke. Net als die mysterieuze wetenschappers willen wij, door verschillende elementen bij elkaar te brengen, iets bijzonders creëren.

Caroline Mewe, creatief directeur: ‘Aanvankelijk wilden we alleen een luxe T-shirtlijn beginnen, maar toen de bal eenmaal aan het rollen was, was-ie niet meer te stoppen. Voor mij voelt Alchemist als terug naar de bron. Van kinds af aan ben ik met mode bezig. Als inkoper voor De Bijenkorf op een heel grootschalige manier. Op den duur miste ik de “menselijke maat”. Ik verlangde ernaar heel dicht op het product te zitten. Nu voel ik alle stoffen, overleg ik zelf met fabrikanten en kan ik eindeloos zoeken naar die ene knoop. Kwaliteit is zoveel interessanter dan kwantiteit. Kwaliteit betekent ook dat we voor een productiewijze kiezen die niet schadelijk is voor het milieu en de mensen die onze kleren maken.’

According to myth and legend, alchemists were able to transform everyday, ordinary objects into something extraordinary and fantastic. They sought the formula to create gold. To the alchemists, gold symbolised the perfection of all matter, both material and spiritual. Like those mysterious scientists, we want to combine different elements to create a special and striking synthesis, something that surpasses its individual components.
debut
January 2005 was the first time that Alchemist presented itself to the public. However, our clothes have been around for much longer than that, in the mind of Caroline Mewe, the driving force behind Alchemist. “Because I rarely found the clothes I wanted to wear, I had the idea of starting my own line. I wanted a label for women who are over thirty-five and sometimes want to look tough, but sometimes super-feminine.
“Everything came together this year. I met the right people at the right time. As a small team, we worked together to create a big collection. Not in terms of size, but of colours, materials and feeling. This first collection is close to my own preferences, but hopefully it will appeal to many women.”
craftsmanship
The most striking feature of the collection is the rich use of materials and an eye for detail that is rare indeed. It is not only the extensively tested cut and fit that demonstrate the craftsmanship that went into it. The seams, hems, lining, piping, buttons: every choice was made based on expert knowledge. There are T-shirts with two-layer front panels and trousers with a touch of Lycra. The chiffon blouses, hand-knit jumpers and smartly cut tweed jackets are works of art in their own right, but they also beg to be combined – thanks to the selection of materials and colours.
The collection also includes bags, shoes and boots. Costume jewellery may eventually also be added. However, because we are a beginning label and do not want our enthusiasm to run away with us, we are going to take it one step at a time for now.

Alchemist stands for quality. That is why we use the most beautiful cotton available, and our jumpers are hand-knit. Alchemist also chooses the best in the production of the clothes. That means that the collection is made with the greatest possible respect for people and the environment.

We hope to live up to our name, both now and in the future. We will search for perfection. We will create exceptional collections with their own unique style and signature. We invite everyone to come and take a look – on this website or in the showroom – and are very interested to hear what the public has to say. No thing or person is an isolated phenomenon. Chemistry only starts when different elements interact.
